Episode 35: Confronting Bias, with Janelle Scales

Danielle and Kristy talk to Janelle Scales, an anti-bias consultant, about confronting bias. It was an honest conversation about recognizing your own bias and how to work on changes internally and externally. We covered several examples of how marginalized groups are denied access through systemic issues as well as long standing biases that need to be challenged.

Notable Moments and Ideas:

10:00 Discussion about identifying your biases by listening to people's stories who have different experiences than they do and being ok with being uncomfortable with listening to those experiences.

15:30 White people have the absolute privilege of being in the dominate group.

17:30 Anti-bias work is internal and external. You have to be willing to have enough compassion for yourself and say "I am not a good person in all the ways that I think I am.” You have to have a lot of compassion, integrity, and courage to admit that you are an oppressive person and to move forward.

32:00 If you don't give marginalized folks an 'advantage' then it's not equal access.

36:00 If you don't address racism with money, you're really not addressing it.

55:00 If you exclude thousands of people, you exclude the most qualified people.

56:30 Lean into discomfort. You can only grow when you're uncomfortable.
